Idris Muhammad Solo!

Just a brief one today featuring the late, great Idris Muhammad in a solo spot from a trio engagement with Joe Lovano and bassist Cameron Brown:

It's not a long solo by any means but he sure packs a lot in there. It's swinging, it's grooving, he's got the Max Roach hi-hat thing going on and he also throws in a brilliant nod to his New Orleans roots (how about that 2nd Line bass drum beat and those buzz strokes/press rolls?) Whew!

Anyways, I bring all this up because he's clearly having fun and not afraid to mash up all his influences into a dynamic package. You can hear all these different elements come into play in a relatively short amount of time but, at the end of the day, he doesn't sound like anyone but himself and he just goes for it.

Something to think about indeed....just go for it!
